Magic users have ‘levels’ of strength. This is to help regulate magic use. While your power level may be constrained to the limits of how far your character has been able to progress, your ingenuity is not. I want everyone to be creative with their power, this is just to help keep things balanced and fair.
Your magic users will fall into one of the categories below for each type of magic they possess.
Even if your character starts at an upper level, they will need to meet the requirements for that level and the one above it before they can rank up. Your character will not start higher than adept unless they have a good in character reason.
Novice:
Your character has either just discovered their magic or hardly practiced it. They will be able to do small things, but if they manage anything large it will probably be because they planned it exceptionally well, or set off a chain reaction by accident.
Example: A fire novice would be able to light candles and create a light for a few minutes. They could also use their powers as the equivalent of a match to set other things on fire, and put out other fires.
There are no requirements for this stage.
Apprentice:
Your character has started practicing their magic, and may have found a teacher. They will be able to perform slightly larger spells, and are starting to understand how to control their magic.
Example: A fire user would now be able to throw a fireball across the room, or create a light for up to an hour.
You must have your character practice their magic in at least three threads to become an apprentice.
Initiate:
Your character is skilled with their magic and probably has several ‘go to’ spells/skills. To make it this far, they would have needed a teacher, or some other study on their own, and they would be able to use their magic effectively for most things.
Example: A fire user can now throw their fire farther, create larger flames, and draw designs or traps with their fire. They are better at keeping their magic in check, and would be able to keep it from burning things they did not want it to—with concentration.
Your character must have practiced their magic in at least three new threads using magic, or have at least two threads with a teacher or other study materials since they became an apprentice, and have participated in at least one mini event.
[Others in progress]
Elementalists who use multiple elements may will only be able to reach certain levels with their individual elements, since their power is divided between all of them rather than focused on just one.
If your character has…
4 Elements – Apprentice max
3 Elements - Initiate max
2 Elements - Adept max
1 Element – Master
Healing magic will follow the same scale separately from any other magic. So, an elementalist could still reach mastery in Healing even if they could only be apprentices in each element.
